My Finds: Metal Detecting Updates and Release Notes
UK PATHS ARE BACK. The public map service the app drew footpaths, bridleways and byways from stopped serving apps in October. My Finds now draws them from its own tile set, built from OpenStreetMap data and served from our own host, so Show UK Paths no longer depends on a shared public server. Thanks to Bob Hughes for the report.
LiDAR FOR WALES AND SCOTLAND. The LiDAR Terrain overlay now covers Wales, and Scotland where it has been surveyed, as well as England, drawn from the national LiDAR surveys and served through Mapterhorn.
YOUR RECORDS, KEPT SAFE ON THE PHONE. The app now writes a photo-free snapshot of every session, find, site, club and category when you leave it, never while a session is recording. Settings > Backup & Restore shows when it was last written, and Restore from Snapshot brings everything back if an update ever cannot open your finds; your photos stay on the phone and are reconnected. If that ever happens, the app says so instead of showing an empty library, with Restore and Email Support on the same notice. It is not a backup off the phone; keep making those. Backup & Restore is now its own row in Settings.
SESSIONS. Show Previous Finds, in the active session map’s options, pins the finds from your earlier visits beside today’s, smaller and fainter. Pause and drive on to the next field and the Resume question waits until you are back on foot. Skip New-Session Advice, in Session Behaviour, resumes an old session without the suggestion first. If the app ends a session because you appear to be driving, it tells you at once, and it now waits a minute before deciding, so a quick lift across a field no longer ends your session. Thanks to Ian Huckle and Bob Hughes.
DIRECTIONS TO SITE. A car button on a prepared session, or Directions to Site on an ended one, opens driving directions in Apple Maps or Google Maps, heading for the landowner’s access point or your last session at that site.
COINS AND CATEGORIES. Find a category by typing: one search field matches categories, subcategories and types, and a tap sets all three. Brass joins the metal types. French coins from the Revolution to the euro join the Denomination list, with their rulers and regimes. Coins whose issuer has no ruler, a Lincoln cent or a Dutch cent, are no longer asked for one, and a coin’s metal can be worked out from its ruler’s reign. A find with no subcategory now shows its Type in its title. Changing a saved find’s category clears the details the new one cannot carry.
RECORDS. Improve Records gains a search field and says “Needs: Subcategory” where that is the real gap. Restoring a backup now brings back every category it carries. Searching your finds matches the club or landowner on the session too. A point-a-second GPS track imported from GPX, GoTerrain or Digly is thinned to the app’s own density, so its distance stops counting the receiver wandering on the spot.
MAPS. Quick again with a large library: saving a find no longer lags, and a long session no longer stalls. Thanks to Ton de Goijer for the report. Starting a session always brings the map in to where you stand. The Historic Map choice is now a single Off / 1888-1913 / 1937-1961 control. On iPhone Duo’s inner display, the layers and LiDAR lighting panels open beside their button.
ALSO. An Email Support row on the paywall and in Settings > Subscription, for when a subscription will not go through. The Apple Watch Smart Stack session card is laid out for the wrist. The User Guide’s Recording Finds chapter gains a Recording Completeness section.

❯ My Finds: Metal Detecting App Description
Which metal detecting app is right for you? It’s this one. Here’s why:
I couldn’t find an app that did what I wanted, in the field and afterwards, so I built my own, had a slew of detectorists beta test it, and have improved it ever since.
TRACK YOUR SESSIONS Tap once and My Finds records your path, even with the phone locked in your pocket. Auto-end after inactivity; pause and resume cleanly when you stop for lunch.
LOG YOUR FINDS Tap to log a find where you dug it, with optional category, subcategory, denomination, ruler, issuer, type, year, depth, metal, VDI and description. Curated lists for British, US, Dutch and German coinage; travelling detectorists can add the US or Dutch category set alongside the UK one. Colour-coded pins by category.
NO TIME TO DIG? MARK THE SIGNAL A strong signal on the walk back to the car needn’t be lost. Mark it from Add Find or with one tap from the Lock Screen, and a question-mark pin waits on your maps until you return. Free and unlimited.
ADD & SHARE PHOTOS Take photos in the field; pinch to zoom, rotate or crop. Bring older photos in from the Photos app via Share, and share any photo out with a tap.
RETRACE YOUR STEPS The Map tab layers previous sessions’ paths, shaded to reflect their age, so you can see where you've been and where you haven't. Replay a session and watch your progress.
HISTORIC MAPS, LiDAR AND ROMAN ROADS
Overlay historic Ordnance Survey maps to research old boundaries, trackways and lost buildings, or switch on the UK public rights-of-way layer. The LiDAR Terrain overlay blends into the map to reveal ridge and furrow and other faint earthworks satellite imagery can’t show (England and Wales, and Scotland where surveyed). Roman Roads draws the scholarly reconstruction of the network; tap any road for its name and route.
PERMISSIONS AND PROTECTED GROUND Keep a record of landowners: contacts, dates, conditions and a copy of your agreement. Draw your boundaries, tap to select registered field parcels where open data exists (the Netherlands, parts of England), or import them from Google Earth, and get a warning as you near the edge. The Protected Areas overlay shows scheduled monuments in England, Wales and Scotland, plus SSSIs and other protected ground in England, and warns if you start a session on one.
SHARE A SESSION REPORT Turn any session into a customisable PDF for the landowner: a map with find pins, plus a photo and details of each find.
SEE YOUR PROGRESS The Insights dashboard charts your finds: totals over time, top sites, metals, periods and personal records. Pro adds custom queries by date, category, metal, depth, ruler, year and more.
SAFE-KEEPING AND MOVABILITY Deleted a find by mistake? Restore it within 30 days. Merge duplicate finds, or move one to the right session. Back up everything to a single file to restore on a new phone or merge into an existing collection. Moving from another app? Import from FindSpot, GoTerrain, Digly and Tect O Trak, or from any app that exports GPX or Google Earth KML.
UK FEATURES OS grid references for every find. Link finds to their PAS records, search finds.org.uk for similar objects, and get the Finds Liaison Officer contact info for the find spot. Detecting Know-How covers what every UK detectorist should know: permission, the law, reporting, beaches and field craft.
PRIVACY No account needed. No ads. No behavioural tracking. Map tiles and overlay data come in; nothing about your finds goes out unless you share it. Anonymous crash reports help improve the app.
PRICING Free for your first 20 finds, map overlays included. Pro removes the find limit, adds Custom Queries, and keeps the historic-maps, LiDAR Terrain and Roman Roads overlays past 20 finds. Monthly or annual, with a 30-day free trial on annual. Lapsed or not, you can always view, export and edit your finds.
