Take a scroll from the shelf and unfold a world of folklore. Yokai Book brings together illustrated creatures, their stories and cited sources on textured paper, with layered printmaking and animated scrolls.

Eight scrolls await on the shelf:
• Hyakki: 132 Japanese yokai.
• Mountains and Seas: 433 creatures and deities organized across all 18 chapters of the Shan Hai Jing.
• Tsurezure-bukuro: 48 characters following Toriyama Sekien’s three parts, with 50 original illustrations including the treasure boats.
• 女怪: 24 entries, including 8 newly illustrated characters and selections from other scrolls.
• 怪火: 16 tales of mysterious fire, with 8 new illustrations and 8 entries drawn from other scrolls.
• 百怪図巻: 30 figures with new illustrations and explanations.
• 愛嬌: 12 playful yokai, with 8 new illustrations and 4 entries selected from other scrolls. The entire scroll is free.
• 山野: 24 woodland and mountain figures, with 16 new illustrations and 8 entries shared from other scrolls. The entire scroll is free.
The lifetime all-scroll pass also reveals 海異, a collection of 28 sea-folklore entries. Themed scrolls can share entries with other volumes.

Read original passages, modern explanations and source references as distinct sections. Classical Chinese passages remain in their original language. Modern explanations are available in Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Spanish. Change reading language and text size in an entry’s aA menu; choose the interface language in system Settings.

Keep your place and progress by scroll, browse grouped bookmarks, search, listen to readings and explore a constellation of connections. Night paper preserves the illustrations’ colors. Optional AR is available on supported devices, and a Today’s yokai widget brings an entry to your Home or Lock Screen.

Hyakki, 愛嬌 and 山野 illustrations are included in the app. Other scrolls download their illustrations when first requested and work offline after download. Manage downloaded artwork in Settings; text and catalogues remain in the app.

Free reading includes 40/132 Hyakki entries, 44/433 Mountains and Seas entries, 15/48 Tsurezure-bukuro entries, 8/24 女怪 entries and the first 5 newly illustrated 怪火 entries. Preview each scroll’s illustrations after downloading its artwork. The first 9 of 30 百怪図巻 entries are also free.

Choose a one-time purchase: one of six individual scrolls, the Hyakki + Mountains and Seas collection, or a lifetime pass for all current and future scrolls. The two-scroll collection excludes other volumes. 海異 is included with the lifetime pass and is not sold separately. There is no subscription. Restore Purchases is supported. The price for new lifetime-pass purchases may increase as more scrolls are added; existing lifetime access remains unchanged.
